Propulsion Systems -->>Download PDF Brochure

SNC's Space Systems exploits a variety of propulsion technologies for an equally diverse set of applications.

 Dream Chaser Launches

Beginning with Vehicle Propulsion, Space Systems has developed a range of hybrid rocket motors that powered SpaceShipOne (SS1) to win the Ansari X-Prize and the motors that will propel the space tourism SpaceShipTwo (SS2) and the Dream ChaserTM astronaut and crew-carrying spacecraft.

 MoTV

In support of SNC and other customer spacecraft needs, Space Systems has Spacecraft Propulsion systems such as transfer stages and ‘responsive’ propulsion solutions that eliminate the use of toxic propellants.

 CCB Rocket Motor

Finally, SNC's Space Systems has solutions for rapid and low-cost, orbital and sub-orbital launch of payloads through its Small Launch Vehicles systems.

Lakeside CA Rocket Test Facility

The Lakeside Rocket Test Facility is a world-class rocket test facility located in close proximity to our propulsion engineering & manufacturing facilities.  Designed from the ground up, our Space Technology Development Center (STDC) comprises a thrust stand with a capabililty of >250,000 lbf, operations trailer, fire suppression system, fluid storage and delivery system, and data recording system.

Space Systems is the world leader in safe, hybrid rocket propulsion . This unique technology is based on a combination of two, very safe, green, non-toxic materials: nitrous oxide (N2O) as the oxidizer, and hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB), or synthetic rubber as the fuel. The result is a propulsion technology that blends the simplicity of solid rockets with the restart and throttle ability of liquid-fueled propulsion, ideal for human spaceflight and low cost/rapid response launch vehicles.

The most significant aspect is that hybrid rockets provide the utmost of safety due to the inability of the fuel and oxidizer to mix and therefore not detonate.  This also provides for safe handling, transport and storage.
